Motherhood Stories & Family Life

The Kitchen Never Closes

Nobody prepared me for how much of motherhood is figuring out what people will eat, making it, and then finding out that information has changed.

Yesterday, bananas were everyone’s favorite.

Today, offering a banana is apparently deeply disrespectful.

And nothing inspires hunger quite like hearing, “It’s bedtime.”

Suddenly, a child who spent dinner examining a single noodle needs a complete meal. Possibly with courses.

Meanwhile, my lunch is three abandoned crackers and whatever I can eat standing at the counter without someone asking for a bite.

They have their own food. They want mine. Mine has the special ingredient: it was about to make me happy.
